Jesus and Mary start out not in a manger, but in a furniture store, where a domineering salesman works tirelessly to sell them a coffee table. The gruesome piece features "fake gold" naked female figures and what the man describes as "unbreakable" glass. The new mom is a bit on the fence about having a baby, and the couple seems to be going through a rough patch in their marriage. The first ten minutes or so could be described as a comedy, but by the halfway point things get darker. Jesus has to assemble a coffee table and his world falls apart in an accident, and the final act is as well done as I have ever seen. The ten-day shoot is a marvel these days, and the script is concise and clever. Don’t miss Coffee Table. A solid 9/10. Don’t miss this gem.
